Sinds de jaren tachtig pleit de overheid ervoor dat zorgarbeid voor hulpbehoevenden verplaatst wordt van de zorginstellingen naar de privésfeer van de burgers en neemt zij beleidsmaatregelen om deze evolutie te ondersteunen. In dit boek wordt dit overheidsbeleid en de gevolgen voor de mantelzorgers wetenschappelijk geanalyseerd. Vanwege het sekse-specifieke karakter van informele zorg- informele verzorgers zijn voor het merendeel vrouwen - is daarbij speciaal gelet op zogenaamde gender-conventies of vanzelfsprekendheden die samengangen met het denken over mannen en vrouwen en over mannelijkheid en vrouwelijkheid. Het doel van dit onderzoek is de gender-conventies waarvan de beleidsmakers gebruik maken, inzichtelijk te maken en na te gaan welke betekenis het gebruik van deze conventies in het informele-zorgbeleid heeft voor de praktijk van de informele zorg.
